Miraculously healed from cancer
March 27, 2013Reaching Arab youth with “Prohibited Questions”
May 21, 2013Behind the veils of Islam, a group of women met in a mosque to study the bible. That is, until all went terribly wrong one day. Our viewers in the Arab world pay an increasingly high price for their new found faith in Christ, yet many remain faithful even until death.
“Mona” was known for her sharp intellect and leader abilities. As a professor at the university and the wife of a religious leader, she enjoyed great respect in her city.
She belonged to an ultra-conservative Muslim community where only the women’s eyes were visible behind the black veils that covered them from top to toe.
One day while her husband was out of the home, Mona got in a new satellite channel on her television set. Normally she would not watch a Christian channel, but there was something about these programs that strongly appealed to her.
Soon she was completely captivated and genuinely taken by what she saw and heard. Because she had a good knowledge of the Koran, she searched the scriptures to see if what she heard on television really could be correct. What she discovered surprised her so much that she had to call the follow-up number on the television screen. It turned out that she had been watching Miracle Channel, and she reached our follow- up office where counselors were able to lead her to Christ.
Bible study in the Mosque
As Mona already was a leader among the women, she soon started sharing what she had discovered with a few of her friends when they met in the mosque. They felt safe that nobody would suspect what they were really doing. Soon Mona was teaching an entire group of women. They met regularly in the Mosque to read the bible and pray to Jesus, thinking that nobody would suspect what they were doing under the cover of their veils. Several of the women came to faith in Jesus, and the group continued to grow. But one day something went terribly wrong. The group had increased to 25 women, and one of them reported the group to the leaders of the mosque.
Exposed
All the women had to run for their lives as fast as they could. Word travelled fast, and Mona was surprised at home by her entire extended family. She was beaten and tortured. She begged her husband and relatives not to beat her in front of the children, but a cousin replied that this would teach the children once and for all what would happen to an infidel. Bleeding, she was locked in the bathroom. Outside the door, she could hear her family discussing her fate, and she heard that the plan was to kill her by electrocuting her with a hair dryer in the bathtub so it would look like an accident.
Escape
While Mona heard them discussing her death, she looked at herself in the mirror while she cried out to God: «Jesus, I love you! Are you pleased with what is happening? Is this what you want them to do with me? » Suddenly she heard one of her cousin’s say that they should wait a few days before killing her for the wounds from her beatings to heal, otherwise the police would be suspicious. The family thought this was a good suggestion, and decided to wait a few days before executing their plan. The next day Mona’s husband wrote a letter with her resignation that she was to deliver in person at the university where she worked, so nobody would miss her when she was dead.
But when she came to work, the first person she met was a Christian colleague.
She took one look at Mona and understood that something was seriously wrong. Mona just had time to tell her the story before she fainted. When she came to herself again, her university colleague had arranged an escape route for her. Mona was told to take a school bus with students to the nation’s capital. She was given a newspaper with orders not to open it before she was on the bus, and not to talk to others.
When she opened the newspaper on the bus, she discovered a hidden cell phone with an unregistered card with a secret telephone number she was to learn before destroying the note. She called the number and was met by strangers in the capital who helped her hide until she got new documents making it possible for her to leave the country. While she waited for her papers to come through, she got news of what had happened to one of the other women in the secret bible group.
“Dalia” had managed to escape, but her desire to see her children just one more time was so strong that she agreed to visit on the promises from her family that she would be safe. But as soon as Dalila got off the bus in the city square to cross the street on her way home, she was shot and killed by a cousin.
A powerful witness
After several anxious months, Mona succeeded at leaving her country. She was received with open hands by believers in the new city she came to. She has now lived there for several years, but she is still living in constant anxiety that her relatives will somehow find her. She has since married a loving and gentle Christian man and is well taken care of, but she lives at a secret address and stays inside as much as possible.
She is still strong in her faith in Christ, and she has a new ministry where she uses the Internet to lead others to Christ. She also writes faith based articles for magazines and is a strong resource in the kingdom of God.
Mona has not seen her children since the day of her escape. Every day she prays that they also will find their way to Jesus so that one day she will be reunited with them in heaven.
*Mona and Dalila are not their real names
