Historical Overview

Syria is one of the world’s oldest civilizations and has long been a center of faith, culture, and trade. Its cities such as Damascus and Antioch played a foundational role in early Christianity; Damascus was the site of Saul of Tarsus’ encounter with Christ, and Antioch was where followers of Jesus were first called Christians. For centuries, Syria was home to diverse Christian communities Orthodox, Catholic, and later Protestant whose influence extended far beyond the region. Culturally, Syria is deeply shaped by Arab identity and Islamic heritage, while historically maintaining space for Christian presence under varying degrees of tolerance. In the 19th and 20th centuries, missionary efforts established schools, hospitals, and ministries that strengthened Christian life and service. However, the outbreak of civil war in 2011 marked a dramatic turning point. The conflict, compounded by the rise of extremist groups such as ISIS, led to widespread violence, destruction of churches, ethnic cleansing, and the displacement of millions, including a significant portion of the Christian population.

Current Status

Since the civil war began, Syrian Christians have faced violence, displacement, and uncertainty. More than half of the Christian population has fled, leaving around 250,000–300,000 believers, many internally displaced. The Christian minority continues to face social hostility, government monitoring, and pressure from Islamist groups, while converts from Islam experience heightened persecution. Despite these challenges, the Church remains a courageous witness. Believers who stayed continue serving Christians and Muslims, showing unity and perseverance. From the ashes of suffering, new life is rising as God draws Syrians to Himself. Like the early Church in Antioch, today’s small and persecuted Syrian believers are called to rediscover the faith of their ancestors, spreading Christ’s love and hope in a nation in turmoil. Reports of returning refugees bring hope for strengthening local congregations. Syria’s Church stands as a testimony of endurance, trusting that God sustains His people and remains their only hope.
